How do we do it?
You’ll find the answers to that question and more right here! Find out more about what kids need to stay healthy, why some kids don’t have enough to eat, and what you and City Harvest can do about it. Talk to your parents and teachers about ways you and your school can help.
Here are some of the places that get food from City Harvest:
Food pantries. A food pantry is like the cupboard in your parents’ kitchen. People who work at the food pantries put food into bags. Then they give the bags to the people who need food and can cook it at home. They can use the food to make two or three meals for their family. Food that usually goes in pantry bags includes: peanut butter, bread, rice, pasta, tuna fish, beans, juice.
Soup kitchens. A soup kitchen is a place for hungry people to eat a hot meal. Soup kitchens serve a lot more than soup. Chefs cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or sometimes all three for the people who come to the kitchen. People eat the food at the soup kitchen.
Homeless shelters. A homeless shelter is a place to have a bed for the night for someone who has no place to sleep. Some shelters also have soup kitchens so they can feed people too.
Senior centers. Elderly people sometimes move into special houses or apartment buildings where there are nurses and other people to help take care of them. Senior centers often include food pantries or soup kitchens, where some senior citizens can get food.
Afterschool centers. Kids go to afterschool centers – you guessed it – after school. Adults at the afterschool centers take care of the kids until their parents come to pick them up. Since kids are usually hungry after school, they also serve snacks.
